100 times the same song

Do you feel like changing the radio station when there is a modern pop song on? Does it feel like you are listening to an older songs just recycled 10 times. There may be a reason why you feel like that!

Making a hit song is very expensive these days and with the revenue from album sales decreasing each year, record labels want to make sure their song will get to top. Ghost writing is nothing new in music industry, but for many big labels it became a standard way to make a Top 10 hit. That is why they dont want to risk their investments and make unecessary bets onto unproved song writers with new original ideas.

They call their best, one of them is Max Martin. A Swedish song writer with more than 20 number one hits which he wrote or co-wrote including Katy Perry's "I Kissed a Girl" (2008), Maroon 5's "One More Night" (2012), Taylor Swift's "Shake It Off" and "Blank Space" (2014), and The Weeknd's "Blinding Lights" (2019).

Many modern song writers also like to reference or borrow from other songs, so they would automatically create a feeling of familiarity within the listeners. While many music experts will recognize the original songs right away, general public is not so interested in originality and will consume the songs as something new, with the feeling they already like it. This creates a feeling that most of the new pop hits sound simply the same and makes you change the radio to your personal song collection.
